Little League All Star Update by david Field

9-10 Year Olds:
Softball: Windham opened their tournament in Windham with a 10-6 victory against Westbrook on Sunday, June 21.  Ella Cote led the team with her pitching. In their second game on Sunday, June 30, Windham fell to Gray-New Gloucester 14-3.  Windham will face Falmouth Friday, July 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the Windham High School Softball Field. That game will be an elimination game.  The team is coached by Fred Wilcox.

Baseball: This tournament is being hosted in Falmouth. The Windham 9-10 year olds are the District 6 defending champions from last year. Windham opened up against Scarborough and quickly sent them to the loser’s bracket in a decisive 11-0 victory on June 22. Windham then faced South Portland American and advanced with a 12-4 victory. In their third game, Windham battled Bayside to a 3-0 win.  Windham will play on Friday, July 5, against neighboring Westbrook.  The winner of that contest advances to the Championship game to be held on Sunday, July 7.  Head coach Paul Kent is very pleased with his team.  “Our wins have been the combination of all 11 kids hitting the ball, playing great defense, aggressive heads up base running and backed by outstanding pitching lead by – Caleb McCartney, Cameron Joyce and Nolan Kent.  This pitching combo has thrown 2-hit games.”

11-12 Year Olds:
Softball: The softball tournament was split between two towns.  Deering LL hosted one branch and South Portland National hosted the other.  Windham fell in their first battle against Portland, 11-1.  In the loser’s bracket, Windham fought off Yarmouth 7-3 behind Tara Flander’s pitching performance and aggressive base running.  Windham then faced Portland again.  This time Windham advanced in the tournament by downing Portland 6-5 in another good performance by Flanders and timely hitting by Lauren Talbot.  Windham finally fell out of the tournament after losing to Cape Elizabeth 11-0.  Cape advanced to face Scarborough and lost the Championship to them.  Travis Demmons was the coach of the softball team.

Baseball: Gray is the host site for the 11-12 year old baseball tournament.  On Saturday, June 29, Windham defeated Gray-New Gloucester 3-2 to advance in the loser’s bracket. Windham faced Yarmouth Sunday, June 30 and won 4-1.  Troy Thornton is the head coach for this All-Star team.  “Pitching and defense have been our strengths. Mike Woods has our only home run.  A three run shot in the first game when we were down by four.”

10-11 Year Olds:
Baseball: This tournament starts this Friday at Lowell Field on Falmouth Road.  Windham faces off against neighboring Gray-New Gloucester Friday night at 5:45 p.m.  The Little League is still looking for volunteers for this tournament.  Contact tournament director David Field at 776-0330 if you are interested in helping out.
