The varsity girls lacrosse team travelled to Westbrook High School on Monday, April 26 to take on the Blue Blazes and Windham’s intensity was there for the full 50 minutes. The team worked together and achieved an impressive 16-1 win over Westbrook.

Two minutes into the first half, Windham senior Riley Beem fired the ball into the net. This opened the floodgates for the Lady Eagles and after Beem’s goal, it was a steady stream of goal after goal after goal. Windham could not be caught.

Windham senior Emma Yale had back-to-back goals plus one more later on. Seniors Julia McKenna and Carissa O’Connell both put the ball between the posts. Juniors Isabelle Babb and Molly Black each put one in the net, plus four more goals in the first half to give Windham a commanding 12-0 lead at the buzzer.

“I think from the start we’ve been such an unselfish team that we’ve been able to work so well together ... and we’re able to find each other (on the field) so well,” said Beem.

Windham’s Babb said that working together, being positive and encouraging teammates made a big difference when it came to their win over Westbrook.

The Lady Eagles did not slow down in the second half, and kept the goals coming and the defense strong, which only allowed Westbrook to get one in the net.

As Windham continued to take shot after shot on Westbrook’s goal, the Lady Eagles’ lead grew. Seniors Emma Millett, Alexis Hirning, Julia McKenna and Bria Campobasso all scored goals in the second half.

“What’s been really great about this group is they are very unselfish,” said Windham coach Matt Perkins. “They’ve really done a good job focusing on the us and not worrying about individual accolades and just playing hard and trying to get better each day. They’ve done a really good with that for sure.” <
