In their only regular season game in the Windham High School stadium last Saturday night the Windham Middle School football team ran over Massabesic’s junior varsity and varsity squads in two dominant performances.
First the JV team won 32-8. Then the varsity players took
the field and in two plays Windham got on the board. Grant Jacobson took a
handoff at the Eagles’ 30-yard line and blew through the Mustangs’ defense
untouched in a 70-yard dash to the end zone. Quarterback Blake Houser flattened
a defender for the two-point conversion and the rout was on. Windham won in
convincing fashion 40-6.
“We played well,” said Windham head coach Tony Leslie. “We
were running on all cylinders and it felt really good to go out and do exactly
what we wanted to do.”
The Eagles team kept its collective feet on the gas for all
four quarters, turning the Mustangs into Shetland Ponies. The offensive line of
Blake Colby, Ricky Brichetto, Braxton Cassidy, Logan Douglas and Owen Shepard knocked
their opponents on their heels the whole game.
Still in the first quarter, Windham’s quarterback Blake
Houser tossed the ball to Garrett Peeples who fooled the Mustangs by connecting
on a pass to Jacobson for a 32-yard gain. On the next play a great lead block
by Josh Mora opened the door for Houser to score, putting the Eagles up 16-0.
On the ensuing kickoff, Corbin Judy recovered the ball for
Windham. One play later, Peeples faked out a Mustang defender and was wide open
for a 55-yard touchdown pass from Houser. The first quarter ended with Houser
and Jacobson sandwiching a Mustang player on an excellent defensive play.
With the score 24-0, at the start of the second half,
Windham’s Treva Valliere made an immediate impact. He kicked off and then crushed
the Massabesic returner for a short gain. On Windham’s first offensive play of
the half, Valliere ran the ball 50 yards for a touchdown.
With two minutes left in the third, Massabesic got on the
board with a touchdown, but couldn’t convert the two points and the score was
32-6. Windham scored once more to make the final 40-6.
In the JV game, quarterback Anthony Gugliuzza and tailback
Seth Wall scored on the ground while Mattingly Babb caught a pass for a
touchdown. Ben Elliott contributed with two-point conversions and on defense,
Brady Bowen had an interception and Judy and George Butts forced and recovered
fumbles. On the defensive side, Brady Jackson and Caleb McCartney made big
plays and Connor Getchell and Will Segler had solid games.
