Undefeated Lady Eagles varsity soccer continue to soar - By Sadie Nelson

Windham Lady Eagles varsity soccer has started the season off strong with a record of 7-0. They’ve beaten McAuley, Sanford, Cheverus, Westbrook, Thornton Academy, South Portland and Gorham. They had their first test against Thornton Academy, where the score was 2-0 at halftime. The first goal came when Jenna Soucy took a shot, bobbled by the goalie, and Melissa Morton finished it.

Soucy then had the second goal of the night, putting a perfect ball into the top right corner of the net. At the start of the second half, Thornton’s Tori Daigle had two breakaway goals in the first sixteen minutes, making the score 2-2. Windham didn’t give up. Maggie Symonds placed a great ball to Morton who capitalized on it, putting Windham up 3-2. Holly Spencer, who had a great game that night, received a beautiful through-ball from Soucy, and Spencer put the ball top middle to make the score 4-2. The game ended 4-2 Windham! So far, Thornton is the only team that has scored on the Lady Eagles. Last Friday night, Windham played under the lights at home against Gorham.

Towards the beginning of the game, defender Emily Kent saved what could have been a huge goal for Gorham and would have made the game 1-0. Freshman Maggie Symonds scored late in the first half for Windham. Before the goal, there was a lot of commotion inside the box after a block by Gorham’s goalie. Windham’s Morton was down in the box, an expected foul by Windham that would have given them a penalty kick, however Symonds found the ball and put it in the back of the net making it 2-0. Symonds ended up with two goals for the night. Soucy also had goal, making the final score 3-0. Goalie, Elizabeth Mycock, had two saves for Windham. Some upcoming home games for Windham include tests against Biddeford, Scarborough and Marshwood.
