On
January 27, the Windham wrestling team hosted its last home meet a tri-meet
between Windham, York and Cheverus. Each team wrestled well, but due to Windham’s
lack of participants, they did not win. Windham has five wrestlers: Dominic
Pelletier at 106 pound weight class, Sam Dubuc at 113 pounds, Sean Butterworth
at 138 pounds, Alex Jordan at 160 pounds, and Colby Valliere at 220 pounds. In
total there are 14 weight classes in Maine high school wrestling.
The
coach for the Windham is Jason Dryburgh, and his assistant is Eric Cash who is
also a recent Windham alumni. When asked about the meet afterwards Coach
Dryburgh said that his team “wrestled really well, especially against Cheverus.
They wrestled tight, wrestled smart and looked for their opportunities and took
them when they could. Overall it was a huge, huge night for them.”
“The
season has been difficult, obviously because of numbers.” Dryburgh said. “It
makes it very hard to be competitive in a dual meet or tri-meet like this, but
when we do have actual competitive matches the scores are usually fairly
close.”
Next
year holds hope that the middle school wrestling team will graduate some more
players up to high school so Windham can truly begin to take home some wins
with a full team. Coach Dryburgh plans on “pushing the team even further” especially
because none of the athletes on the team this year will be graduating. He's
expecting 10 to 11 students to join from the middle school team next year.
