Windham varsity baseball got the bats going early in a game against Deering at Windham High School on Tuesday, May 19. The Rams put two runs on the scoreboard in the first inning and Windham was quick to answer and tied the game 2-2 after one inning. Deering pulled ahead and Windham fought to turn this game around. Although Windham had double the hits Deering did, the Eagles were unable to pull ahead and lost 5-4.

After Windham tied the game 2-2 in the first, Deering added two more runs in the second and Windham defense held them there for three consecutive innings.
In the top of the third inning, Windham sophomore Mason Rulman had a rolling catch in center field. Windham got a double play when they picked off a runner at second who advanced without tagging up to end the inning.
“To start off the game we come in and compete and play hard (is the goal) ... but then someone strikes out, their attitude gets down and we just lose all our confidence,” said Rulman, who went 2-3 during the game. “Not everyone is engaged in the game like they should be. I thought we pitched well, we swung the bat, we were aggressive at the plate. We got to put the ball in play, and score runs and we can compete with anyone. We got to have more confidence as a team when we’re up to the plate. We’re flat (in the dugout). We got to come out with energy or else no one’s going to have confidence.”
In the bottom of the third inning, Windham freshman Ryan Manning reached first base on a Deering error. Sophomore Maddix Morgridge singled and Manning scored. It was now 4-3, Deering.
Deering added another run in the sixth inning, but Windham wasn’t done.
The Eagles knocked off the first three batters in the top of the seventh inning.
Rulman singled in the bottom of the seventh, then senior Anthony Rinaldi doubled and brought in Rulman. Windham was close but couldn’t get out in front or tie the game.
“There’s a lot of kids that weren’t confident today,” said Rinaldi. “The only time we were on it and locking in was at the end of the game. Maddix and Mason did really well today. Everybody was upset and it was all over the place emotion-wise. People need to stop being selfish. In the beginning of the game, I went 0-2 and then changed my mentality and the next at-bat said, ‘I’m the best player on this field’ and then hit a single and a double, which was clutch. We need to be more positive and mindful, it’s not just about yourself, it’s about everyone else – we’re a team for a reason.”
According to Doughty, Rinaldi battled and kept them in the game pitching for five innings. Rulman and Morgridge pitched well. If Windham isn’t collectively playing as a team, it’s hard to win with two or three guys, said Doughty. They are a young team but play so much baseball; they should know any game can switch in an instant.
Moving forward, Doughty said they need to show up and try to put their most competitive attitudes on the field and just try to get better, hopefully finishing with some wins. <
