The Eagles traveled to Cheverus to open their season against the Stags last Friday night. With Seniors Kevin Weisser and Marcus D’Andrea leading the team, Weisser led the scoring for the Eagles with 21 points. D’Andrea scored 13 points for Windham.
The game remained close and
both teams led at different points in the game. Windham led after the first
quarter 18-15; however, Cheverus outscored the Eagles in the second quarter and
lead the game 33-30. At the end of the first half, Marcus D’Andrea cut it to
three points when he made a three-quarter-court shot that had the crowd on its
feet witness. The Eagles closed it to 45-42 after the third quarter, when
Weisser made a 3-pointer from the top of the circle and Kyle Kilfoil scored a
layup off a nice feed from D’Andrea. The fourth quarter decided who would win
the game. Kevin Weisser, who led all scorers with 21 points, hit a 3-pointer
and made the game 59-56 with 18 seconds left to play. However, with Cheverus’
Austin Boudreau in possession of the ball and the Stags running the clock down,
Windham was forced to foul him. Stags Boudreau went to the foul line 4-for-4
with the final score ending 63-56.
“We kind of slugged it out
tonight,” said Cheverus coach Dan Costigan. “Windham is a good team. They’re
going to win their share of games.”
“We didn’t take care of the basketball and we
didn’t execute our offense,” said Windham coach Kevin Millington. “The other
thing that hurt us was the fact we ended quarters well, but got off to slow
starts at the beginning of quarters.”
