The Eagles stomped the Blue Devils in a 57-8 victory in
their football season opener. However, with the win came a loss for the team,
as senior Dylan Koza suffered an injury after scoring his second touchdown of
the game.
Koza appeared to be untouched and unstoppable as he made
his way to the end zone, but after crossing the goal line, he fell to the
ground. He was attended to for a period of time by both Windham’s and
Lewiston’s trainers as his parents knelt beside him on the field before leaving
in an ambulance. Koza rushed for 928 yards last year and scored 12 touchdowns,
although he missed two games.
Windham coach Matt Perkins said "It looked like his
foot might have got caught. He's a critical piece to us. He has been for a long
time. He's such a great kid. He's such a quality leader, and it's his senior
year. That's what's tough. Sometimes that stuff is unfair."
Both Griffin Jacobson and Kyle Houser knew they had to
step in and help to fill the void that Koza left with his injury. And step in
they did, Jacobson scored three straight touchdowns and rushed for 104 yards on
five carries. Houser added 53 yards on four carries and scored a touchdown of
his own.
"We had some real good leaders," Perkins said.
"The guys battled and finished the job."
Windham outscored Lewiston 30-0 in the first quarter. The
Blue Devils just couldn’t keep up with the push the Eagles made. Lewiston
didn't get a first down until late in the first half. It seemed that as the
game went on Lewiston couldn’t help but make mistakes. The Blue Devils threw
three interceptions and had a safety when a punt snap sailed through the hands
of the punter and out of the end zone.
Lewiston also lost the ball when a punt
hit a Blue Devils fielder and was recovered by Windham. Add in quarterback
Desmond Leslie’s touchdown from the 4-yard line and by halftime the score was
50-0.
Lewiston did finally get some offense going in the second
half of the game when they scored its only touchdown of the game. Windham added
another score in the fourth when freshman quarterback Blake Houser who stepped
in for Leslie threw a 20-yard pass to Hunter Coffin to end the night.
Varsity football’s first home game will be Friday, September
11th against Bangor at 7:30 p.m.
