On Saturday, September 27, 12:30 p.m. at Boulos Stadium, Portland Back Bay - the Windham Eagles faced off against the Cheverus Stags. The field held two undefeated teams, both with 3-0 records. The sidelines held the view of Back Bay on one side and fans galore on the other side. It was a beautiful fall afternoon to watch this showdown. Cars were stopping and parking on the side of the road and onlookers were walking up to the fence to catch a glimpse of the game that was the talk of the weekend for high school football.
Going into the game the Stags were favored to win with
Windham falling in the past to them. The
Eagles had no such thought and the fans came early to pitch their seats for the
best view possible.
Cheverus scored the first touchdown of the game in the
first quarter which ended up being the only one they would score throughout the
game. The Eagles team banded together
and scored their first touchdown minutes into the second quarter. Windham went on to score in five straight
possessions and the team didn’t look back.
The Eagles and coaches lining the sideline kept the team
pumped and supplied with water through this unusual hot fall day. This is a team that has great comradery and
it showed throughout the day.
Quarterback Desmond Leslie stepped up and threw some
great passes to Eric Webb, Mitchell Eskilson and Zach Davis. The Eagles defense was outstanding stopping
the stags from progressing down field.
Kicker Josh Dugas was on his mark with every punt and field goal. It was just a great game overall.
Those present were happy to be a part of the Windham
Eagles being the team to end Cheverus’ 36 game regular season winning streak
since 2009. The final score: Windham 35
– Cheverus 7.
