Windham squeaks by Locke Mills by David Field

WINDHAM-As this team has proven before, they don’t give up. Windham battled into the sixth inning to win a nail biter 8-7 against Locke Mills (Bethel).

In the first, Windham’s defense committed two errors to allow two runs to score. Windham’s starting pitcher, Spencer Hodge battled back and struck out three batters to contain the damage. In the bottom frame, Windham answered with a run. Spencer Hodge reached on a single and stole second base. Dennis Meehan ripped a solid single to drive Hodge in. 

After a few scoreless innings, Windham made some adjustments and the scoring began. With one out in the fourth, Dennis Meehan hit a single and was followed by Shawn Francoeur. Nate Boyle drove Meehan in. Joey Francoeur reached base on an error and Zach Conley hit into a fielder’s choice as Shawn Francoeur was thrown out at the plate. Ethan Petty drew a walk to load the bases. Calvin Field ripped a long ball over the center fielder’s head to drive in three runs. Windham had a 6-2 lead going into the fifth.

Joey Francoeur took the hill in the sixth for Windham. Leadoff batter Ben Holmes drew a walk. Tyler Frost hit a single and Izak Mills hit a double to drive in Holmes and Frost. Jesse Bennett then hit a single to drive in Mills. Francoeur then struck out Chase Harkins and Sawyer Harkins grounded out. Locke Mills wasn’t done. Kyle Peterson hit a single and was driven in by Alec Manning. On the same play, Windham managed to get Eric Howell out as he tried to take second. That finished the inning, but Locke Mills had the lead going into the bottom of the sixth.

Joey Francoeur led off the inning with a walk. Zach Conley sacrificed Francoeur to second on a nice bunt. With one out, Calvin Field drove Francoeur in with a shot to the outfield. With Field standing on second, Jack Herzig roped a double to drive Field in for the winning run.

Dennis Meehan closed the game out for Windham on the hill. He struck out two and had a ground out.

Windham faces Brunswick on Wednesday for a double header in Brunswick. On Saturday, July 6, they face Past Time in Lewiston for a double header.
