The Lady Eagles defense is key - By Cari Sbardella

Beginning the 2013 Girls’ Varsity soccer season, the squad looked strong and they have remained strong all season.

Senior players Vanessa Ludka, Emily Gorrivan, Emily Gilman, Ariana Davidson, Laura McKenna, Lauren Shoemaker and Kate Kneeland add a lot of experience and depth to a smooth running machine.

A core group of juniors including Cassie Symonds, Luisa Sbardella, Shannon Valente, Hannah Haskell, Melissa Morton, Jenna Soucy, Liz Mycock, Alana Duke and Jordan Sargent have been playing together since third grade and complement the senior leaders.

Add the talented sophomores Madison Mauro, Ciera Berthiaume and Katie Herzig and the addition of freshman Holly Spencer and that makes a rock solid team who has outscored their opponents this season 61-2.

If you ask the team, they are only as strong as their defensive members Ariana Davidson, Emily Gilman and Jordan Sargent along with Goalkeepers Kate Kneeland and Elizabeth Mycock are a force to be reckoned with and an ominous presence on the field. Their defensive presence lends itself to great passing for the midfielders and front line. Accurate crosses and field position are two of the reasons the team is having as much success scoring goals.

Looking ahead to the end of the season, senior leadership and strong coaching are expected with the addition of James Stewart to complement the coaching staff of Deb Lebel, Jen Sullivan and Jeff Fish. The Lady Eagles are truly blessed. While the post season is on the horizon, the Lady Eagles are taking nothing for granted. They play and live by the motto “Offense wins games, but defense wins championships”

The next home game for the girls will be Saturday, October 19, 9 a.m. for JV and 11 a.m. for varsity.
